Tunnel Ridges | Road 6

Israel

Mining 2 tunnels (total length: 4,700 meters), including 1,200 meters using the Cut & Cover method as part of the construction of the northern part of Highway 6 from Yokne'am to the Somekh Junction.
  • Client: Shafir Civil and Marine Engineering Ltd., Pizzrotti (Italy)
  • Period: 2018
  • Budget: NIS 300 million
  • Description:

Mining two tunnels using the NATM method with three driving lanes (length: 1,750 meters each). Cut and Cover in three segments (length: 1,200 meters). Mining connected tunnels (Inner Lining) using the Cast-in-place Concrete Lining method. Floor casting and other construction work along the route of the tunnel.

So as to meet tight deadlines, mining work was carried out on 4-6 fronts simultaneously, including night shifts. 50 tons of tools were used and cooperation with international manufacturers from Turkey, Italy and Spain was necessary.

Due to the complex geological conditions along the route it was necessary to install a prefabricated roof which included installing steel arches each of 1-1.5 meters in length combined with Sn Bolts and/or Self-Drilling Bolts, with a total weight of 3,500 tons of steel.

The mining was done using sophisticated mechanical-engineering equipment: Jumbo's face drilling machines; Surface Drilling Machines; Multi-use drilling machines; Concrete sprinklers, concrete pumps, buffers, telescopes, bulldozers and grilles.
